Intrathoracic Adenomatous Goiter;Report Of A Case


Abstract
Although the occurence of intrathoracic goiter is not quite rare, adenomatous type accompanying calcification appears to be rare, The present report is concerned with a case of typical intrathoracic adenomatous goiter which showed amorphous central calcium deposits.
The patient was admitted because of dull headache and fatigability of 5 months¢¥ duration, Physical examination and vital sings were all not remarkable.
A substernal mass with central calcification was noted on PA and latateral views of the chest, The diagnosis of substernal goiter was made, The patient was operated upon on the 20th hospital day, Enlarged left lobe .of the thyroid was removed through the collar incision, Tcie histological diagnosis was follicular adenoma with calcification.
A review of the literature disclosed the incidence of the intrathpracic goiter(not the adenoma only) to range from 0 25 to 10%, According to McCort; adenornatthis goiter comprises only a very small fraction of the intrathoracic goiters.
